Frank Yearwood’s walk-off, three-run homer in the top of the ninth capped an extra-inning rally that propelled the visiting Palmetto Tigers to a 7-3 victory over the Bayshore Bruins in boys varsity baseball.
Chris Heier (2-for-4, home run) singled to start a ninth-inning rally, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball before Yearwood’s blast.
Jared Taylor pitched seven innings, giving up one earned run for the Tigers (3-1). John Collins pitched the eighth and ninth innings to earn the victory in relief. Collins also went 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate.
For the Bruins (1-3), Tyler Schoppelrey hit a home run and pitched five innings, logging 12 strikeouts with a barrage of nasty curveballs.
JUNIOR VARSITY -- Joey Ambrogino pitched four strong innings in relief for the win, and Scott Stout struck out seven batters in three innings of relief for the save as the Lakewood Ranch junior varsity downed visiting Braden River 6-1. Ambrogino scored twice and had a hit for the Mustangs (3-0).
Softball
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 16, SOUTHEAST 4 (5) -- Hailey Dearlove gave up just one earned run and went the distance as the visiting Panthers (1-1) won easily.
Lily DeVirgilis led the BCS offense with three hits. Dearlove, Kara Saylor, Madison Dreier and Savannah Shontere each had two hits. Dreier drove in a pair of runs.
Kelsey Koleff led the Seminoles with two hits.
MANATEE 10, PORT CHARLOTTE 0 (5) -- Freshman Taylor Bell’s three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning put a run-rule end to the game for the host Hurricanes (2-1), who began Class 7A-District 11 play with a victory.
Taylor O’Quinn pitched five innings and fanned nine for the shutout victory, and she went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI at the plate.
Reese Byrne was 2-for-3 with three steals; Amber Schaad was 1-for-2 with two RBIs; and Hailey Hopkins was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Canes varsity and JV teams will travel to Key West High School for games on Friday and Saturday.
Girls tennis
SOUTHEAST 4, BAYSHORE 3 -- Katie Yetzer and Jordashia Watson each had a part in two victories as the visiting Seminoles slipped past the Bruins.
Yetzer won at third singles, while Watson got a win at fourth singles. The duo paired up to win at second doubles. Southeast’s other win came from Jamie Glass, who claimed a forfeit victory.
Bayshore got wins from No. 1 singles player Olivia Trevorrow and No. 2 singles player Ellissa Alvarez. Those two players also won at No. 1 doubles.
RIVERVIEW 5, OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 2 -- Maria Ross and M. Balia Bangoura won the top two singles matches, but the Thunder (1-1) fell short of victory against the Rams (3-0) in Sarasota.
Boys tennis
SOUTHEAST 6, BAYSHORE 1 -- Justin Suca, Sam Silverberg and Stephen Henry each won a singles match and had a hand in a doubles victory for the host Seminoles, who improved to 3-1.
Alexander Strzakwoski got a singles win, and Ricky Henler teamed with Silverberg for the No. 1 doubles win.
Top singles player Pedro Garcia was the lone winner for Bayshore (0-4).
