Bradenton bicyclist dies in crash that sends him over bridge

PALMETTO -- The Palmetto Police Department is investigating the death of a bicyclist on the DeSoto Bridge early Sunday.

Adon Newsom, 44, of Bradenton was riding his bicycle southbound over the bridge about 4:20 a.m. Sunday, according to a Palmetto Police Department press release.

He was hit by a driver in a 1997 Saturn. The impact knocked the bicyclist over the bridge’s concrete retaining rail into the Manatee River.

The driver of the Saturn stopped briefly at the scene to try to give aid, then continued to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where he summoned help.

The crash remains under investigation.
