PALMETTO -- Where do you get your doughnuts and coffee?
In Palmetto, the answer may soon be Dunkin’ Donuts.
On Monday, the Community Redevelopment Agency’s board of commissioners decided to grant the franchise owner of Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins around $25,340 in commercial incentives to locate the two businesses at the former Sonic Restaurant site at 612 10th St. E.
The incentives will be distributed over five years.
The CRA, composed of city commissioners, is an appointed board which oversees economic development in Palmetto.
Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant and the board said they were excited that the new businesses would be occupying the currently vacant property. However, some voiced dissatisfaction about the franchise owner’s choice of contractors.
“No one from the city of Palmetto was contacted,” said Alan Zirkelbach, commissioner-at-large. “It’s disheartening … that they give projects to someone else.”
Sarasota roofing and plumbing companies as well as a Bradenton mechanical company were hired to do the renovations for the new restaurants, according to documents provided by the city’s building department.
Total renovations for the project are expected to cost around $266,756, Jeff Burton, CRA director said.
Burton said that the company could have received incentive bonuses had they hired local contractors.
Commissioner-at-large Tamara Cornwell said she hoped the new businesses would give back to the community through outreach programs.
About 20 jobs will be created, Burton said, and the company plans to hire locally.
He said Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins are set to open their doors around April 15.
In other matters, $800,000 will be paid this week to the county so that construction of the little league ball fields at Blackstone Park can move forward, the commission agreed. The creation of the fields has been a debated issue for about three years, ever since the North River American Little League lost its playing fields to the new Palmetto Elementary School.
