Four Southeast wrestlers won district championships, and 12 Seminoles advanced to next week’s region as Southeast finished second Saturday at Class 1A-District 11 tournament at Englewood Lemon Bay.
Lemon Bay won the team event with 206 points. Southeast scored 184.5 points.
Joey Fazio (106-pound weight class), Oscar Navarrete (113), Nick Kemick (126) and Larry Cannon (138) claimed titles. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the region tournament Friday and Saturday in Naples.
Other Southeast wrestlers who advanced included Logan Beagle (second, 152), Gage Takacs (second, 170), Ricky Almodovar (second, 182), Alex Gater (second, 195), Kane Takacs (second, 220) and Michael Quintero (second, 285). Austin Bennett (third, 160) and Mark Hawn (fourth, 145) also advanced.
Saint Stephen’s advanced two wrestlers with second-place finishes. Eighth-grader David Contarino was second in the 126-pound weight class, and Nic Rodhouse was second in the 145 class.
CLASS 2A-DISTRICT 11 -- Six Palmetto wrestlers advanced to the Punta Gorda Charlotte region by placing in the top four at the Port Charlotte district.
The Tigers scored 124 points and placed third as a team behind champion Charlotte (267) and Venice (194). Among other local teams, Lakewood Ranch was sixth with 99 points, Braden River was 10th with 56 points, and Bayshore finished 11th with 35 points.
The Mustangs recorded two district champions in Blake Riley Hawkins (132-pound weight class) and Alex Rickard (220). Evan Dipsiner (113) and Kevin Garza (182) each placed third to advance for Lakewood Ranch.
Palmetto’s top finisher was Tyler Williford, who placed second in the 152-pound weight class. Anthony Viscomi (120) and Josh Howard (126) each placed third, while Tyler Montague (103), James Banks (182) and Robert McLachlan (195) each came in fourth.
For Braden River, Sam Massenburg (152) and Dylan Lee (160) each placed third to advance to the region tournament.
Bayshore’s Anthony Slack (106) placed third, and teammate Benjamin Cocroft (126) came in fourth.
Juco basketball
ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE 72, SCF 69 -- Denzel Myers poured in 22 points, but the host Manatees fell to 6-16, 1-3 in the Suncoast Conference with a tough loss.
State College of Florida led 30-26 at halftime. Elias Gutierrez scored 14, Bobby Thomas had 12, and Odi Onyekachukuw contributed 10.
Boys basketball
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 52, IMG 47 -- Joey Carollo’s double-double led the host Panthers to a victory, closing out their season with an 18-5 record.
Carollo had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Landon Hochstetler added 13 points, and Nick Scheimann had 10.
Juco softball
SCF 4-6, SANTA FE COLLEGE 3-0 -- The Manatees (6-2) got a four-hit shutout from freshman Paige Mathews in the second game to complete a sweep of the visiting Saints.
Mathews struck out eight to earn her second victory. Angie Dascoli had the big hit, a three-run triple, and went 2-for-3. Manatee product Shannon Brockett went 2-for-3.
In the opener, Brockett and Ingrid Cabrera each knocked in a pair of runs to account for the scoring in support of SCF starter Chelsea Oglevie, who got the win going the distance. Oglevie allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out five. Kat Gavern had two hits.
The Manatees host Palm Beach State College for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
