MANATEE -- Sheriff’s deputies report gunfire was exchanged between two vehicles traveling west on Whitfield Avenue in unincorporated Manatee County Thursday evening.

The incident occurred in the 1500 block at 5:50 p.m., according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.

The report does not indicate if anyone was injured.

Several deputies raced to the scene and set up a perimeter to search the area, according to the report.

The first vehicle continued westbound and was not located, the report states. The second vehicle swerved into Hidden Acres Apartments where two men hopped out and began running north between the apartments, the report adds.

The suspects’ trail was picked up by a sheriff’s office K-9, but the suspects were not located.
