MANATEE -- In northern states, motorists are used to the danger of deer gliding out of woods and onto highways.

The sight of a deer crossing in Florida, however is unusual and, in Manatee County, downright rare.

At 6:55 p.m. Sunday, two deputies in a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office patrol car were traveling eastbound on the 18000 block of University Parkway when a deer ran into the side of their vehicle, according to a sheriff’s office report.

The deputies estimated their speed at the time of the incident at only 45 mph, the report adds.

The deer, whose size and exact species was not indicated in the report, may have survived the accident, according to the report.

The impact did cause a significant amount of damage to the front driver’s side door of the patrol car, but the deer continued running, the report states.

The deputies in the vehicle were not injured, the report concludes.
