BRADENTON - Tammy Edwards peeped through a window Friday night and saw a man sprawled on the street in front of her home.
She called 911. At about 9 p.m., deputies arrived at her home in the 1700 block of 27th Avenue East.
As Edwards watched, a deputy pointed a flashlight on the mans face. Edwards recognized him.
Thats my nephew, she said.
Kenya Cox, 19, was shot once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cox was the fourth homicide victim of the year. Deputies are investigating and following several leads.
Saturday Edwards placed white orchids in a cup on the spot where her nephew died. The pavement where Cox was found the night before was still wet.
Tom Moore, a neighbor who lives across from Edwards home, said a fire truck arrived at about 3 a.m. and washed the blood from the pavement.
On Friday night, Moore said he was home when he heard one gunshot.
Thats all it was, he said. One shot.
When he looked outside, Moore saw deputies on the street.
Next door, Jennifer Davis also heard one gunshot, and then tires screeching. But she didnt think anything of the gunshot, she said, because random shots have been fired in that area regularly since New Years Eve.
But when she saw flashing lights through her window, she opened the door and saw deputies.
I was just shocked that it happened so close to home, she said. Its a shame.
On Jan. 9, Ina Gross, 78, was found dead by her 57-year-old son, Tom, in the two-car garage of her home in the 19000 block of Hyacinth Place in Lakewood Ranch. The sheriffs office said her homicide was not random.
