Tennis: Murray wins Brisbane title

BRISBANE, Australia -- Andy Murray warmed up for the Australian Open with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory over third-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov on Sunday in the Brisbane International final.

For the second consecutive match, Murray had Ivan Lendl watching from courtside. Aiming to break a drought for British men at the majors dating to 1936, Murray hired the eight-time Grand Slam tournament winner as coach earlier this month and the pair met up Saturday in Brisbane.

“I’d like to thank my team ... Mr. Lendl, he’s up there somewhere, hiding,” Murray said. “It’s my first week with this new team and it was good. I really enjoyed it. Hopefully it’ll bring more success in the future.”

ELSEWHERE -- Milos Raonic beat top-seeded Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) in a serve-dominated Chennai Open final in Chennai Open, earning his second career title. Fourth-seeded Raonic hit 35 aces in a marathon match that lasted 3 hours, 16 minutes and didn’t include a break of serve. ... Ana Ivanovic’s Australian Open preparations hit another obstacle Sunday when the former No. 1 player lost to Lucie Safarova 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the Sydney International in Sydney. ... Anna Chakvetadze of Russia beat third-seeded Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-0, 6-4 in the first round of the Hobart International in Hobart, Australia.

Golf: Stricker maintains lead at PGA opener

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Steve Stricker finished the third round at Kapalua the same way he started -- with a five-shot lead.

Only it wasn’t that easy.

Stricker watched his lead dwindle to a single shot on the back nine Sunday before running off four straight birdies for a 4-under 69 that gave him a big lead going into the final round at the Tournament of Champions.

He was at 19-under 200, five shots clear of defending champion Jonathan Byrd (67), Martin Laird (67) and Webb Simpson, who also had a 69 while playing in the final group with Stricker.

Simpson and Byrd each had a putt on the back nine to tie for the lead.

Through three rounds, Stricker now is 13-under par on the five closing holes at the Plantation Course.

ELSEWHERE -- Louis Oosthuizen holed a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 17 to top fellow South African Tjaart van der Walt and retain his title at the Africa Open in East London, South Africa. The former British Open champion beat Van der Walt by two shots after closing with a 6-under 67 for a 27-under total of 265 at the season-opening European Tour event. ... Hank Haney has written a book about the six years he spent as Tiger Woods’ swing coach, a volatile time in which Woods went from winning nearly half of his tournaments to a scandal that derailed his pursuit of golf history. Without giving away any details until “The Big Miss” goes on sale in the spring, Haney believes the book will be hard to put down.

College basketball: MJ’s son leaving UCF

ORLANDO -- Jeff Jordan, the oldest son of Michael Jordan, is leaving the Central Florida basketball team for what he says are “personal reasons.” The school announced the decision Saturday night but did provide further details.

Soccer: Manchester United ousts Manchester City

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United held off 10-man Manchester City in the second half, ousting the defending champions from the FA Cup with a 3-2 victory in which Paul Scholes surprisingly come out of retirement.

The third-round victory allowed United to exact a measure of revenge on City for a 6-1 rout in the Premier League this season and for a loss to its crosstown rival in last season’s FA Cup semifinals.

Skiing: Suter wins super-G race; Vonn 18th

BAD KLEINKIRCHHEIM, Austria -- Fabienne Suter of Switzerland won a super-G race, while Lindsey Vonn was 18th and failed to finish among the top three in this World Cup event for the first time in nearly three years.

Suter, who was third in Saturday’s downhill, was timed in 1 minute, 9.55 seconds and won for the fourth time in her World Cup career. Tina Maze of Slovenia was the runner-up, 0.34 seconds behind. Anna Fenninger of Austria took third, another 0.40 back. The top American was Julia Mancuso in eighth place.

ELSEWHERE -- Marcel Hirscher of Austria extended his perfect start to 2012 by winning a World Cup slalom Sunday to pad his lead in the overall standings. He won for the third time in four days and became the first man to win the first three races of the year since Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark in 1978.
