Robert L. Lewis, one of the original Highwaymen artists, will sign copies of his 2012 calendar from 11 am to 4 pm, Saturday, September 17th at Palmetto Historical Park & Agricultural Museum, 515 10th Ave. West, Palmetto. The month of May 2012 features the painting Green Bridge which Lewis painted for the art sale held in Palmetto this summer. Lewis will also perform a live painting demonstration at 1:00 pm. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis. In addition, an original R. L. Lewis painting, valued at $450, will be raffled off. The suggested donation for tickets is $10 for one ticket or $25 for three tickets. No purchase is necessary. Funds raised through this project will support the work of the park and museum. The raffle drawing will be held on December 5, 2011. The Highwaymen are a group of African-American landscape artists who painted scenes of Florida during the '50s, '60s and '70s. Their paintings were typically sold door to door and on the roadway at relatively low prices. Now, original Highwaymen work is highly valued and exhibited in museums and other venues around the state.
