EAST MANATEE -- An arrest has been made in a road rage incident that led to a serious assault Thursday morning in the parking lot of Braden River Elementary School, the sheriff’s office reports.

John Sabin, 45, was placed in custody at about 6:45 p.m. and charged with aggravated battery after being positively identified by the victim, according to the sheriff’s office.

The 50-year-old victim was driving his 10-year-old son to the school, 6125 River Club Blvd., when he noticed he was being tailgated by a man also in his 50s, driving a black, two-door sports car, a media release said.

The suspect followed the victim into the school parking lot, and confronted the man and his child, according to the report.

Minutes later, thinking it was safe and that the suspect had left, the victim got out of his car with his son. The suspect reappeared and attacked the victim, who sustained a broken rib, separated shoulder, partially collapsed lung and contusions on his face, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspect fled the scene.

The victim was transported to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and later released, according to sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow.

The victim’s son tried to intervene during the fight, Bristow said, but was not injured.

The victim could not be reached Thursday by the Herald for comment.
