ASSOCIATED PRESS The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been on both ends of preseason routs, but dont expect them to take any positives out of a blowout loss to the New England Patriots. Usually its easier to teach em after a big loss because you can whup them and do whatever you want to do to them and everyone is accepting of it, coach Raheem Morris said Friday, one day after his team was dominated by New England in a 31-14 thumping. But for us, whether its been a big win or a big loss ... its been the same general approach every time I talk to the team. I dont think it really applies to our football team. After a 25-0 rout in Kansas City in their preseason opener, the Bucs were humbled by the Patriots, who took a 28-0 lead on their first five possessions. We got outplayed physically up front, Morris said, and then really, it was a different approach to the game in how we played and they played. Morris wanted to evaluate his young players without any scheme or anything of that nature, and the early pace set by the Patriots was a big problem for the Bucs. We felt like we didnt come out with the same intensity as last week, the same intensity that they had, quarterback Josh Freeman said. They came out and they took it serious ... you can see that with the intensity they had on the field. It is something for us to take and learn from. Rookie linebacker Mason Foster might have learned a lesson from an unnecessary roughness call that kick-started the Patriots second touchdown drive. Foster separated Chad Ochocinco from the football with a perfectly timed hit, but was penalized either for launching himself at the receiver or for hitting him in a defenseless position. Theres going to be questionable (calls) like that all year, Morris said. The human element is definitely going to be a factor, but the way they explained it to me and all the other teams, theyre going to err on the side of caution. I dont have a problem with it. Morris credited center Jeff Faine and offensive tackle Donald Penn for making adjustments to New Englands blitz, and noted that defensive back Elbert Mack had a big game that included a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown. Corey Lynch, Larry Asante and Dekoda Watson were also singled out for defensive plays. GIANTS Osi Umenyioras summer soap opera continues. A week that began with the disgruntled New York Giants defensive end finally reporting to camp after a lengthy holdout, will end with him out of it, as he will miss up to a month following knee surgery. NEW MEADOWLANDS A person familiar with the deal says the home of the Jets and Giants will be called MetLife Stadium. The source told The Associated Press that MetLife has finalized a deal to buy the naming rights for the $1.6 billion stadium that will be the site of the 2014 Super Bowl. The source asked not to be identified because the agreement between the insurance giant and the NFL teams has not been announced. JETS Plaxico Burress will make his playing debut for New York in the teams preseason game against Cincinnati on Sunday. Running back Shonn Greene will not play as he recovers from what the team calls a low-grade skin infection on his right foot. Nick Mangold (stinger) and Joe McKnight (concussion) are expected to play. Fridays results DOLPHINS 20, PANTHERS 10 Cam Newton threw a Hail Mary pass that fell incomplete on the final play of the first half and thats the closest he came to reaching the end zone. The top pick of the NFL draft was shut out in his first exhibition-game start, and Newtons Carolina lost to Miami. Newton played the entire first half, when the Panthers managed only three first downs, had the ball for less than eight minutes and fell behind 17-0. Newton went 7 for 14 for 66 yards, and he ran four times for 18 yards. Miamis Chad Henne played the entire first half and led the Dolphins to 17 points in five possessions, including 10 points in two series against Panthers reserves. Henne went 15 for 24 for 194 yards, and he had a 17-yard scramble. REDSKINS 16, COLTS 3 One week after Rex Grossmans impressive performance, John Beck answered by leading the Redskins to four straight scores in the first half. Grossman was 19-of-26 for 207 yards in a 16-7 win over defending AFC champion Pittsburgh last week. Becks answer: 14-of-17 for 140 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions against the defending AFC South champs. RAVENS 31, CHIEFS 13 The Kansas City and Baltimore both ended their preseason touchdown droughts. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor directed two fourth-quarter touchdown drives, the first ending with Jalen Parmeles go-ahead 10-yard touchdown run with 7:16 remaining, and the Ravens rallied for a victory over the winless Chiefs. LIONS 30, BROWNS 28 Colt McCoy threw three touchdown passes two to tight end Evan Moore in the first half, but Cleveland blew a 15-point lead after halftime and lost to Detroit in a penalty-filled exhibition that showed both teams have plenty to fix in the next three weeks. The Lions (2-0) trailed by 10 entering the fourth, but got a 20-yard TD pass from Drew Stanton and Dave Rayners 48-yard field goal. JAGUARS 15, FALCONS 13 Jacksonvilles quarterback competition turned out to be a stalemate against Atlanta. David Garrard did little to solidify his starting spot and rookie Blaine Gabbert was equally unimpressive as the Jaguars beat the Falcons. Garrard completed 7 of 12 passes for 99 yards, with an interception in three series. Gabbert, the 10th overall pick in Aprils draft, completed 11 of 23 passes for 96 yards in seven series. Gabbert was plagued by several drops, including three on one second-half series that forced the Jaguars to settle for a 54-yard field goal.
