Fugitive sex offender arrested in Lakewood Ranch

August 18, 2011

SARASOTA -- A convicted sex offender wanted as a fugitive since July 2010 has been arrested in Lakewood Ranch, according to the sheriff's office.

Miguel Orduno, 40, an illegal immigrant previously deported from the United States in 1998 and again in 2002 after serving federal prison time, was wanted for failure to register as a sex offender, failure to appear in court, possession of marijuana and providing a false name to a law enforcement officer.

Orduno, who had eluded capture by using various false names, was arrested late Wednesday by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office's Fugitive Apprehension Unit near Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and University Parkway, according to a news release.

Orduno was being held at the Sarasota County jail on bonds totaling $3,500, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement had placed a detainer preventing his possible release.
