MANATEE -- The man accused of attacking Sister Nora Brick on Valentine's Day has been arrested, according to authorities.

Eliseo Ortiz, 51, was arrested by the Tarpon Springs Police Department on Thursday on a warrant charging him with aggravated assault, said Dave Bristow, spokesman for the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Ortiz is currently being held in Pinellas County Jail and is expected to be transferred to the Manatee County Jail where he will await trial.

Ortiz, who authorities believe is homeless, is accused of attacking Sister Nora on Feb. 14 at her home, where Ortiz had allegedly gone to ask her for money.

Sister Nora’s 30-year ministry, which includes the Stillpoint House of Prayer in Bradenton, came to a close because of her injuries.

She took the news of the arrest in stride at the Franciscan convent where she’s retired in Tenafly, N.J.

“I forgave him long ago. Forgiveness is the Christian thing to do. It’s the more healing thing than keeping a grudge,” she said. “I hope they won’t be too hard on him.”

“I’m sure the man didn't know what he was doing at the time,” said Susan Belvo, a Stillpoint House of Prayer volunteer. “I’m sure she’d say live and let live. She’s forgiven him. She’s a better woman than I am.”

“Oh, my goodness,” said Don Gaudette, the Stillpoint House of Prayer office manager. “I’m glad it’s done. There is no animosity on my part. Or sister’s.”
