BRADENTON -- Phil Dilandro is hoping to get noticed.

The way the left hander performed Tuesday it would be awfully hard to miss him.

The 5-9, 160 pounder used his arm and his bat to spark Suncoast Reebok to a 9-1 victory over the Puerto Rican Rays, Tuesday at Pirates City in the final day of pool play in the 18 & Under Nations Baseball World Series. The game was stopped after six innings because of the mercy rule.

The victory gives Suncoast the number one seed for the double elimination bracket phase of the tournament that begins today. It is the only team to finish pool play undefeated and untied.

Dilandro went 2-for-4 with three runs-batted-in and scored a run. On the mound, he went six innings, struck out seven and allowed only three hits.

“They (Puerto Rico) were good. They definitely came to play, but I had good stuff and everything was working for me,” Dilandro said. “My strikeout pitch today was my curveball. It was breaking real well and I had good command. It gives us the number one seed and that puts us in a good place for the double elimination part of the tournament.”

Dilandro played three seasons for Lakewood Ranch High, but said he is transferring to the IMG Academies Pendleton School for his final year of high school.

“We just have better opportunities over there to showcase our skills and more opportunities to get noticed,” Dilandro said. “This is my first day pitching in this tournament, but it’s been a busy summer. I think this was a good place to showcase my skills because it’s Pirates City and there has to be scouts crawling all over the place.”

Dilandro got some good support. Zach Hoppe from Out-Of-Door-Academy went 2-for-3 and scored a run and Connor Lewellen blasted a solo homer in the fifth.

Dilandro helped himself with a two-run double in the third and Ryan Fischer had a two-run double in the in the sixth. Tyler Dauphinee had an RBI for the winners.

“Phil was very efficient. He threw only sixty-two pitches didn’t walk anyone and allowed only three base runners,” Suncoast manager Dave Dillingham said. “He is not overpowering, but he threw everything for strikes and his change-up was his best pitch and he has a good fastball.”

This is fourth tournament for Suncoast Reebok this summer. It has come close in two of the events but has never won one. The team has two events left after this one.

“It would be nice to win this, especially since we are the only local team in it,” Dillingham said. “We will probably start Hoppe next. It’s between him and Steven Mathe (Cardinal Mooney ). So far our top hitter in the tournament has been Conner (Lewellen). He had three hits yesterday (Monday) and two hits today. He is the hot hand for us right now.”

Suncoast Reebok begins Championship Bracket Play today at 11:30 a.m. at Pirates City. It allowed six runs in its three pool play games.
