USF Sarasota-Manatee enters an exciting era

The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee achieved another milestone this week. By earning accreditation independent of the university system’s home campus in Tampa, the regional branch becomes a separate entity -- one free to pursue its own priorities without seeking approval.

Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools culminates a long effort that gained momentum two years ago when the university first applied. That application came in response to the Legislature’s mandate that regional campuses acquire independent certification. The branch also gained a large measure of autonomy at that time when then vice president Dr. Arthur Guilford was elevated to the position of regional chancellor, giving him sole authority over campus operations.

With full accreditation, USF Sarasota-Manatee can chart its own course -- an important change not only for the campus but for the entire community. The potential for regional economic development through new programs in higher education is considerable. Guilford has indicated that USF can be much more responsive to the community, developing degrees that meet the needs of business.

The school can now grant its own degrees and award diplomas under the USF Sarasota-Manatee name, hire faculty and make decisions on student admissions, advising and financial aid instead of waiting for word from Tampa.

Another exciting development will be the admission of freshmen and sophomores, with Guilford setting a goal of a freshman class entering in the fall of 2012. Currently, the campus focuses on junior and senior undergraduates who are mostly students with two-year college degrees, as well as graduate and continuing education students.

Exactly one year ago, USF unveiled plans for a campus expansion with a dormitory that would be a first. This would be a boon to students who wish to reside on campus in a more traditional university setting here in southwest Florida.

The university also hopes to beautify the portion of Tamiami Trail that fronts the campus, with Guilford intending the school become a catalyst for businesses along the heavily traveled route. We share that hope.

The university is already expanding on its slate of more than 15 academic offerings, this fall adding a master’s program in hotel and restaurant management, two new master’s in education and an undergraduate degree in speech, language and hearing disorders.

We share Dr. Guilford’s enthusiasm about the university’s certification: “We feel this is a highly significant move and positive growth for our region and for the University of South Florida.”

USF Sarasota-Manatee will celebrate this milestone today in the Main Rotunda. Our heartiest congratulations and hopes for the future.
