BRADENTON -- Five Bradenton Marauders were selected Thursday to the Florida State Leagues All-Star Game, which will be played at 7:05 p.m June 18 at BrightHouse Networks Field in Clearwater.
Pitchers Kyle McPherson and Brett Lorin, catcher Ramon Cabrera, infielder Jarek Cunningham and first baseman Aaron Baker will compete for the South Division, which also includes players from the Port Charlotte Stone Crabs, Fort Myers Miracle, Jupiter Hammerheads, Palm Beach Cardinals and St. Lucie Mets.
McPherson came within two outs of throwing Bradentons first no-hitter Tuesday and is 4-1 with a 2.93 earned-run average. He began Thursday leading the league in innings (672/3) and walks and hits per innings pitched, or WHIP (0.95), and second in walks per nine innings (0.80), second in fewest baserunners per nine innings (9.44) and eighth in strikeouts (55).
Lorin is 2-2 with a 3.25 ERA and 45 strikeouts and 441/3 innings. Lorin, who also has one save, has made 11 appearances this year with six starts.
It is the second straight All-Star pick for Cabrera, who was tabbed for the South Atlantic Leagues game last year while he was in West Virgina. This season, Cabrera is batting .336 with nine doubles, seven RBIs and 17 runs scored in 32 games with Bradenton.
Cunningham entered Thursday tied for the league lead in extra base hits (31) and is second in slugging percentage (.599). He is also tied for third in home runs (11), tied for sixth in doubles (15), tied for fourth in triples (five) and is third in total bases (112) and OPS (.936). Cunninghams 31 extra-base hits ties him for fifth most in all of minor-league baseball.
Another SAL All-Star pick last year, Baker is batting .270 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs in 50 games. He is ranked seventh in the league in RBIs.
