We the Kings will get their day

MANATEE -- Look for the average age of attendees to the county commission to drop significantly in October when the alternative rock group We the Kings headlines the meeting to accept a proclamation for We the Kings Day.

The popular group already has the key to the city, but Manatee County is not about to be outdone. Carol Whitmore, the county commission’s chairwoman, has been trying to set up a date to get the band in commission chambers so the board could declare We the Kings Day in Manatee County.

Whitmore said Travis Clark, lead vocalist and guitar player, confirmed the band would attend the Oct. 11 meeting. Bad news for at least some of their fans: It’s a school night.

Clark, Hunter Thomsen (guitar, backing vocals), Drew Thomsen (bass) and Danny Duncan (drums) grew up in Bradenton and attended King Middle School, which is where the group got its name.

Their self-titled debut album topped Billboard’s New Alternative Album sales chart. The group earned a platinum record for its hit “Check Yes Juliet.”
