The State College of Florida Manatees made quick work of their first state tournament opponent in five years.

The Manatees beat St. Petersburg College 25-15, 25-16, 25-22 during the first round of the FCCAA State Women’s Volleyball Championships at Polk State College.

“They played well. It wasn’t our best match, but we played well,” said coach Carmine Garofalo. “I wish it would have been a little cleaner and a few less mistakes. But it was a great start to the tournament.”

Aurora Newgard had 16 kills and nine digs, and Abby Gaiotti had 17 digs for SCF (34-5). Natalie Gaudreau added seven kills and 11 digs, and Lacey Blackman had six blocks and five kills.

The Manatees will try to claim the top spot in the tournament’s Gulf District at noon today when they face Suncoast Conference rival Hillsborough Community College.

SCF defeated Hillsborough twice during the regular season, with both matches going five games.

The eight-team, double-elimination tournament runs through Saturday.
