SARASOTA — The name of the Lakewood Ranch-bound television production company was unveiled in dramatic fashion Monday morning.
Before a room full of reporters, elected officials and film professionals, Ken Sanborn took the podium, dimmed the lights and played a video presentation that said it all: “The anticipation is over ... a slice of Hollywood in Sarasota ... Sanborn Studios.”
The film and television production studio is Sanborn’s own creation, a project he committed to full time after selling his defense company Gyrocam Systems to Lockheed Martin in 2009.
“Our goal was to stay under the radar and do as much research as we could,” said Sanborn, whose entertainment company, Sanborn Entertainment has several productions ready to begin this fall.
Sanborn Studios has secured two local facilities to set up in immediately. A 30,000 square-foot building in Lakewood Ranch Corporate Park will be a temporary home for Sanborn Studios and will house two sound stages, production offices and makeup and dressing rooms.
Sanborn Entertainment will be located at a 30,000-square-foot aviation and production center at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport and will give the TV company office and post production space.
Sanborn plans to purchase six acres from Schroeder-Manatee Ranch to build larger and permanent infrastructure for Sanborn Studios, and the project could ultimately expand to 22 acres.
Over the next three years, Sanborn Studios expects to create 117 jobs with an average annual salary of $72,000 for full-time employees.
The TV production company’s first major production will be a 22-episode television series titled “Miami 24/7”.
Sanborn Studios has been approved to receive $650,000 in economic incentives from Sarasota County if it fulfills its job-creation requirement of 117 jobs over three years.
