MANATEE — Mark W. Colvin, convicted of lewd and lascivious acts upon a child younger than 16, will be extradited back to Manatee County after being on the run since 1993 according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.

Colvin, 45, was caught in Beaufort, N.C., by a state trooper on Friday at a driver’s license check point. Colvin attempted to avoid the checkpoint by parking his car and walking to a wooded area. Troopers eventually caught up to him, according to the police report, and discovered an expired Oklahoma driver’s license under the name Eric Franklin Birchfield.

Once at the station, Colvin’s real identity was realized after his fingerprints were taken and revealed he was wanted in Manatee County.

North Carolina authorities charged him with failing to register as a sex offender, and will release Colvin to Manatee County after his local charges are dropped.
