PARRISH — Advantage Home Systems, a home inspection business that provides thorough in-depth visual examinations of the structure and operational components of residential properties, has opened.

The company inspects 10 major systems of residential properties including roof structure, exterior, interior, appliances and HVAC as well as visual inspection of up to 400 components.

CEO Spencer to speak at Keiser University

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Laura Spencer, president and chief executive officer of Tervis Tumbler, will speak Sept. 15 at Keiser University, sponsored by the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

Spencer joined Tervis in 1997 as controller and was promoted to chief financial officer and chief operating officer before taking the reins as CEO in November 2006.

Business owners and professionals concerned about customer service and retention, world class brand recognition and anyone looking for insight to take their business to the next level should attend. There will be a networking opportunity from 7:30 to 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast provided by the Culinary Institute of Keiser University. The program will be from 8 to 9 a.m. The cost is $15 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

Stocks fall due to slow growth in economy

NEW YORK — Stocks fell Monday after more signs of slowing economic growth got investors worried ahead of a key report on jobs later this week.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost ground throughout the day and closed with a loss of 141 points.

Other indexes also fell more than 1 percent during trading.
