Florida Safe Pools recognizes four layers of pool safety.

n The first layer involves always having one person designated to be the pool monitor. Also recommended is limiting talking on the phone, washing the car, cleaning the house and other household tasks when the pool area is open.

n The second layer includes installing alarms on all exterior doors leading to the pool and childproof locks, and limiting access to pet doors, which children can – and do – use.

n The third layer includes installing a 5-foot tall safety fence around the pool with self-closing and latching gates, as well as installing alarms on gates leading to the pool and keeping furniture away from the fence that children can use to get into the pool.

n The fourth layer includes keeping toys and floating objects out of the pool, removing trip hazards from the pool’s edge and keeping a working phone at pool side.
