SARASOTA — Nik Wallenda, 7th generation circus performer and legendary aerial daredevil, along with his wife, Erendira will be executing acrobatics 75-feet in the air above St. Armands Circle 6 p.m. today.

Rain date has been set for the same time Saturday if necessary.

Following the performance, Nik and Erendira Wallenda will be signing autographs in exchange for donations to All Children’s Hospital.

Old Main Street to celebrate end of summer

BRADENTON — The “End of Summer Bash” is scheduled for 2-10 p.m. Saturday on Old Main Street, featuring live music from the Michael Mack Band, a car show DJ’d by Cadillac Jimmy, more than 40 street vendors selling a variety of foods, arts and crafts and more.

Old Main Street will close to vehicular traffic between Manatee and Third avenues west from 1-11 p.m.

Realize Bradenton opens ‘Creative Registry’

BRADENTON — Realize Bradenton has begun a “Creative Registry” in an effort to connect with artists, performers, designers and creative businesses in Bradenton and Manatee County.

The registry allows individuals to indicate their areas of interest, from calls for public art projects, exhibitions, arts and crafts show information, professional collaborations, workshops and news of other opportunities.

Those who register will receive news on downtown creative opportunities and will become part of a growing online community that contributes ideas and opinions about how to make the arts and culture a centerpiece of downtown and riverfront development.

Literacy Council spelling bee this Saturday

BRADENTON — The Literacy Council of Manatee County will host its 4th Annual Spelling Bee from 6-9 p.m. Saturday in the Bradenton Municipal Auditorium, Barcarrota Blvd.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Literacy Council’s Adult Literacy Program and the Rotary Club of Palmetto.

Tickets include dinner, catered by Orange Blossom, a cash bar, silent auction and the spelling bee. Local adults from several area service organizations will compete in the bee.

USF elects first faculty president

MANATEE — The newly created USF System Faculty Advisory Council has elected Elizabeth Larkin, professor in the College of Education at USF Sarasota-Manatee, as its first president.

In her new role, Larkin will serve as faculty representative on the USF Board of Trustees.

Chowdown for Charity tickets go on sale

LAKEWOOD RANCH — The second Chowdown for Charity will be held 5-8 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Gold Coast Eagle Hospitality Courtyard, 7051 Wireless Court, Lakewood Ranch.

Last year’s celebrity judges — Rep. Bill Galvano, Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston, Brighthouse Networks reporter Summer Smith, and Bradenton Herald columnist Vin Mannix — return to judge the best of the best among several area restaurants. The public attending the event will also be able to vote for their favorite dish.

This year the event will benefit the Manatee County Food Bank and Prostart, a program to give added employability skills to high school grads.

Renaissance on 9th to host cooking demonstration

BRADENTON — Renaissance on 9th, 1816 Ninth St. W., will host a cooking demonstration, “Around the World Any Night of the Week,” at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 11.

Executive Chef Joe Stoddard will teach guests how to prepare cosmopolitan cuisine from Greece, Italy and France with step-by-step instructions.

The cost is $25 and includes the cooking demonstration, samples of the dishes, soft beverages and a recipe booklet. Events at Renaissance on 9th support the programs of Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee.
