Car and dog wash today for shelter

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Honor Sanctuary Animal Rescue will have its July Car and Dog Wash at Monty’s Pizza (behind Chili’s in Lakewood Ranch — Market Street/University Parkway) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

Volunteers will wash both cars and dogs. Refreshments and treats will be served.

Braden River infestations to be treated

EAST MANATEE — Water hyacinth and water lettuce will be treated on the Braden River by the Southwest Florida Water Management District workers from Aug. 2 to 6.

They will apply aquatic herbicide to infestations on the river south of State Road 70 East. Warning signs will be posted. Treated water should not be used for watering livestock, or irrigating lawns or ornamental plants for one day following treatment. Treated water should not be used for drinking for two days.

Back-to-school fundraiser set for Aug. 15

MANATEE — A fundraiser to benefit the children of the Gregory Estates neighborhood will be held Aug. 15.

Money raised will be used to buy back-to-school supplies. The fundraiser, sponsored by the Gregory Estates Community Coalition, will be from 7 to 11 p.m. at Touch of Class, 5131 14th St. W.

For $10 admission, attendees will receive a buffet dinner and entertainment by the Henry Lawrence Band.

Sarasota Bay Great Scallop Search set for Aug. 21

LONGBOAT KEY — The third annual Sarasota Bay Great Scallop Search is set for Aug. 21 at the docks at Mar Vista in the Village on Longboat Key.

To help monitor the local scallop population, Sarasota Bay Watch is seeking water and boating enthusiasts to spend a few hours searching for scallops at pre-determined locations in Sarasota Bay.

The event is free and includes a Sarasota Bay Watch T-shirt and lunch.

Participants should bring snorkel gear and their own boat and crew.

The event begins with a captains’ meeting at 8:30 a.m. at Mar Vista.
