BRADENTON — Police arrested a Bradenton mother after finding her 3-year-old child wandering in the street. The child led officers to a home infested with cockroaches, according to a Bradenton Police Department report.

Just after 5:30 p.m., Monday, police found a 3-year-old girl standing on the corner of Fifth Street West and Martin Luther King Boulevard, without shoes and her feet “covered in gravel,” the police report said.

The child took officers to where she lived, in the 1100 block of Fifth Street West, and her mother, Chasity Denise Cummings, 36, told police her child had unlocked a door and wandered off.

Cummings allowed police to enter the home where officers found dirty clothes strewn about the house, an extremely dirty kitchen with a sink full of dirty dishes, and empty food containers “strewn about the house,” the police report said.

“As I continued through the house with Ms. Cummings I saw hoards of cockroaches crawling on the floor in every room, and on the walls of every room,” a police officer wrote.

Police arrested Cummings on a child neglect charge and she was being held in the Manatee County jail without bail.
