A loggerhead turtle early Sunday became the first sea turtle this year to build a nest on Anna Maria Island, according to Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch. The turtle came ashore near Willow Avenue in Anna Maria, deposited a clutch of eggs, covered them with sand and then returned to the Gulf of Mexico. A volunteer with AMI Turtle Watch found the nest and built the protective barrier. PHOTOS BY MARC R. MASFERRER/mmasferrer@bradenton.com
