Buzz Worthy: sARTee events shaping up for Manatee

May 16, 2010

Remember sARTee? The new fringe festival highlighting local art events in Manatee and Sarasota counties? The event will debut Oct. 8-24, crossing paths with the second annual Ringling International Arts Festival. Manatee already has several special activities planned via Realize Bradenton and the Bradenton Downtown Development Authority.

They include Village of the Arts’ Art Golf. The miniature golf event, set for Oct. 16, will feature artistic installations at each hole made by local artists. There’s also a World Party Celebration at the South Florida Museum Oct. 15, with food, music and fun arts-related activities.

But what may turn heads the most is ArtSlam, an outdoor event showcasing the talents of the most innovative artists around.

In fact, a local/national call to artists has been sent out by Realize Bradenton seeking 10 teams for the 12-hour public art event slated for Oct. 16.

The teams’ mission? To create an outdoor installation/collaboration using visual, media, literary and performing arts talents. There’s no theme involved, but teams must be compellingly creative. They can act, sing, dance, read, perform music, paint, create other kinds of cutting-edge art or a combination of all the above in front of an audience. Teams will have 12 hours to accomplish this task in a space of no more than 22 feet long and 10 feet deep.

“This is going to be such a cool event,” said Johnette Isham, executive director of Realize Bradenton. Held during the seasonal return of the Bradenton farmers’ market, ArtSlam is sure to attract crowds.

Teams will present their work for the public to vote on. Jury prizes of $250, $150 and $75 will be awarded to the best artistic collaboration. Team members must be at least 18 years old. ArtSlam contenders can mail application packages to Ann Wykell of the Downtown Development Authority, 101 Old Main St., Bradenton, FL 34205. Packages must include names and contacts of team members, their arts education background, samples of previous artwork related to the proposed project, a brief statement of the proposed project and special equipment needed. For questions, e-mail Wykell at awykell@ ddabradenton.com. Application deadline is Aug. 1.

So far there are 29 events listed for the festival. To have an event considered for sARTee, visit www.sartee.org.
