Free skin cancer screenings offered
SARASOTA — Florida Cancer Specialists and its nursing staff will be on hand Saturday when the Gulfside Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society hosts a Skin Cancer Awareness Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Siesta Key.
The goal of the event, which is open to the public, is to heighten awareness of the need to protect skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Oncology nurses will offer information about prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancer. A family nurse practitioner will be available to check areas of the skin that may cause concern.

Manatee County Extension announces water school
MANATEE — The public is invited to water school 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m May 6 to learn about challenges, opportunities and the future of water for the state of Florida, Manatee County, and the city of Bradenton.
Speakers will be from the water management district, local estuary programs and county and city. On May 7, there will be a watershed and treatment plant tour. The cost of the water school is $30, which includes two lunches and refreshments. Information: 722-4524.
AmeriCorps VISTA Project seeks local volunteers
BRADENTON — The AmeriCorps Vista Vision Project in Manatee County has openings for seven volunteers who can commit to spending a year serving the community.
The jobs will begin in mid-June and mid-July.
The open positions are database management, development and analysis; coalition building for children’s health insurance program; establishing a charitable foundation for human services organizations; community mapping and “neighborhood” building (must live in Palmetto Community Redevelopment Area); asset-building development program for community; leading a family self-sufficiency initiative; and leading a workforce development initiative.
VISTA members receive a $5,350 Segal Americorps Education Award or $1,500 post-service stipend, living allowance of $10,692, 10 days vacation and 10 days sick leave, health care benefits while in service, child care assistance while in service, student loan forbearance or deferment while in service, one year of noncompetitive status for a federal government job and access to the network of VISTA and VISTA alumni.

H2U to host free stroke awareness seminar May 11
MANATEE — There will be a free educational seminar on stroke prevention and wellness as part of National Stroke Awareness Month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 11 at H2U Cortez Center, 6670 Cortez Road.
Neurologist Dr. Sanjay Yathiraj will be a guest speaker at the event. Light refreshments and door prizes will be available. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. the day of the event, and health screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol will begin at that time.
