Mother jailed for leaving child in car

MANATEE — A 36-year-old mother was arrested after she reportedly left her daughter sleeping inside a car with the windows rolled up while she went grocery shopping, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Stacey Lee Olivieri, of Bradenton, told deputies she went inside the store and left the child by mistake Wednesday, according to the report.

A woman who parked beside Olivieri noticed the child asleep in the vehicle and had the manager page the store to look for the driver. The woman was concerned because she could not tell if the child was breathing.

Paramedics were called to check the child, who appeared fine, but “her skin was very warm to the touch.”

Authorities estimate Olivieri arrived at the store before 5:35 p.m., the store management paged her at about 5:40 p.m. and paramedics were dispatched at 5:58 p.m.

The woman told deputies she dropped her sons off for class in Sarasota and does not typically bring her daughter. She stopped at the grocery store and went inside where she, “went to the spice area to buy basil, meat area to buy sausage, bakery to look at pies and went to the pasta aisle to buy sauce and pasta,” according to the report.

Olivieri then heard the page and went to her vehicle where the woman was waiting.

As of Thursday night, Olivieri remained in jail without bond.

MANATEE — A 68-year-old man remained in jail Thursday night after he was charged with eight counts of driving under the influence with property damage or injury and one count of driving while his license was suspended as a second offense.

Elmer R. Daniels, of Bradenton, crashed his white van in the 4900 block of 26th Street West just before 8 p.m. Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Daniels, who refused to perform any field sobriety test, was drinking Keystone Light as the trooper completed the paperwork, according to the report.

Daniels initially switched seats with his wife, but was later identified as the driver of the van by four adults in the other vehicle who were complaining of injuries.

Daniels told deputies he was drinking in the van and had almost finished two beers. He said he typically drinks a six pack per day, according to the report.

Daniels was convicted of DUI with a .20 blood alcohol level or higher in 2008, according to court documents.

Daniels has a bond set at $16,500.
