“Fiddler on the Roof” is that special breed of play that has the world wrapped ‘round its little finger.

Wherever it plays, people flock to it.

It’s one of the reasons the Tony Award-winning Joseph Stein musical was chosen this season at the Players Theatre.

“Besides the fact that it’s one of the smartest and best written musicals in musical theater,” said artistic director Jeff Kin, “it’s so sincere. So universal.”

The theater will present the classic story of the village milkman, Tevye, and how his Jewish family copes with a series of changes in their small Russian village — for good and bad.

What makes “Fiddler On the Roof” so memorable is its music. Noteworthy tunes include “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Matchmaker” and “Tradition.”

If Kin had to pick three things that stand out for him on the show, it would be Chava (one of the daughters), the song “Anatevka,” whose simple words pack much meaning, and the humor.

“It’s funny,” Kin said of the play. “Without humor, we can’t live.”

The play will be directed by Carole Kleinberg. The large cast includes Leonard Rubenstein, who will play Terya.

“Fiddler on the Roof” opens today and continues through April 3. Tickets are $23 for adults and $12 for students. For information, call 365-2494. The theater is at 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
