MANATEE — The area’s job picture worsened significantly in January, according to figures released today.

Manatee County’s unemployment rate was 13.2 percent in January, a jump from December’s revised 12.6 percent, the Agency for Workforce Innovation said.

The picture was dimmer in Sarasota County, where 13.4 percent of the county’s workforce were jobless. That’s up from December’s revised 12.2 percent.

Florida’s jobless rate was 11.9 percent in January, up slightly from December’s revised 11.7 percent, the state agency reported. The January figure tied the state’s highest since records began in the early 1970s, the result of losing more than 303,000 jobs since the beginning of 2009.
