3/10 School Briefs: FBLA students make state

EAST MANATEE — Twenty-six Braden River High School Future Business Leaders of America students are slated to attend the state leadership conference April 5 in Orlando, according to information from the school.

During a Feb. 11 District-18 Leadership Conference at Woodland Community Church, students captured 22 total medals including 11 first place titles in events.

This year, with 66 members, BRHS was the largest Chapter in FBLA District-18, said William Gaynor, the schools FBLA advisor.

FBLA is a national career and technical student organization that fosters authentic business ethics, skills and leadership principals needed for the 21st Century Workforce of tomorrow.

Perlman quartet to perform and teach classes

SARASOTA — The Perlman Music Program Sarasota 2009-10 LK Quartet residency in Manatee and Sarasota county schools is set to conclude with programs during the week of March 22-25.

The quartet, a group of Perlman Music Program alumni based in New York City will perform and teach classes at Palma Sola, Lakeview and Gocio elementary schools, and Haile, Booker, Sarasota and King middle schools, according to information from Perlman.

Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School fine arts week set

BRADENTON — Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School will hold its annual fine arts week from March 15-21, at the school’s Bradenton campus.

The event is open to the public and kicks off with a reception for the Alexi Tucker Memorial Art Show, featuring artwork created by students in the upper school visual arts classes.

An annual event for the school since 1999, the exhibit is funded by John and Diane Tucker in memory of their daughter, Alexi, a Saint Stephen’s student with a special love of visual art.

Professional artists, gallery owners and architects from Sarasota and Manatee counties will jury the show and select pieces for special recognition.

Bayshore High students offer free pie for math

BRADENTON — Bayshore High School students can win a piece of pie by answering a math problem when the school’s Mu Alpha Theta club celebrates Pi Day during lunch March 15. Some of the school’s business partners have also donated pizza pies and dessert pies for the event.

Boston Crusaders camp scheduled for March 26-28

LAKEWOOD RANCH — This months camp for the Boston Crusaders is scheduled for March 26-28 at Lakewood Ranch High School at 5500 Lakewood Ranch Blvd.

The Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps is the third-oldest junior drum and bugle corps in the nation and member of Drum Corps International. The corps, composed of brass players, percussionists and color guard members from around the country who are younger than the age of 22, travels over 10,000 miles each summer, performing in more than 40 competitions and exhibitions before a combined audience of over 300,000 fans.

One weekend a month, from November to May, students and teachers from around the country visit the school to practice music and marching routine in preparation for the summer tour.

All 6 area high school JROTC’s net top marks

MANATEE — All six high school JROTC programs in the Manatee County School District recently received the highest possible ranking following an inspection from Sixth Brigade personnel from Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga., according to information from the school.

The six JROTC programs were all awarded “Honor Unit with Distinction” status after being inspected for cadet staff briefing, curriculum knowledge, in-ranks inspection, cadet attendance/participation and other factors.

To receive the highest ranking, cadet units must receive 96 percent or higher.
