A 34-year-old Bradenton man has arrested on murder charges in the February 2009 shooting death of a woman whose body was discovered in a rural area of East Manatee, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's officials say Jose Luis Marrero was brokering a drug deal for Lauren Lichon, who was then 22, when he decided to kill her and take an undetermined amount of cash.

Marrero, of the 4800 block of 18th Street West, was arrested today at the Manatee County courthouse where he was attending a hearing on an unrelated criminal charge.

Lichon’s body was discovered on Feb. 5, 2009, off North Rye Road in eastern Manatee County.

"Detectives developed Marrero as a suspect early in the investigation," a sheriff's news release states. "The break in the case came this week when a witness to the murder gave a statement to detectives implicating Marrero. "

Marrero was being held with no bond at the Manatee County Jail.
