Concert to aid orchestra programs

BRADENTON — The Concert in the Garage is being held tonight to raise funds for the Manatee High and other local middle school orchestra programs.

There will be a classic car exhibition and continuous entertainment by orchestra students from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Jake’s Automotive, 708 Ninth St. W.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. There will be complimentary refreshments.

17th Street at U.S. 301 closing this weekend

SARASOTA — Construction work will close 17th Street at southbound U.S. 301 this weekend, the Florida Department of Transportation said.

The road will be closed from this afternoon through Sunday for installation of water and sewer lines, FDOT said.

To access 17th Street west of U.S. 301 from the north, take Martin Luther King Way west, then turn south on Dixie/Gillespie avenues or North Orange Avenue. From the south, go west on 12th Street and north on North Osprey Avenue or North Orange Avenue to 17th Street.

The median opening in U.S. 301 at 17th Street will remain open and no lanes on U.S. 301 will be closed during the work.

Wellness Community plans Family Fun Day

SARASOTA — The Wellness Community of Southwest Florida will host a Family Fun Day for local families with child cancer survivors from 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 27 at G.WIZ — The Science Museum.

Activities will include a museum open house, luncheon and games designed for the group.

Participants and their families also will meet and connect with other families dealing with the same issues.

Representatives from Tampa’s Children’s Cancer Center also will be on hand to discuss the resources they have available.

Center For Sight to host an Eye Opening Event

MANATEE — The Manatee County office of Center For Sight will hold an Eye Opening Event at 9 a.m. Feb. 27 at 5219 S.R. 64 E.

Presentation topics will include cataract surgery with premium lenses, all-laser LASIK, cosmetic facial surgery, glaucoma treatment, macular degeneration and hearing services.

A drawing will be held during the event for a $250 gift certificate.
