Scouting Bartram Trail: The Bears (23-2-1), in the final four for the first time, are powered by Sam Scalf, a senior forward who has 58 goals and 18 assists and will take her game to James Madison University. Senior midfielder Bri Swift paces the team in assists (24), while the goaltending tandem of Lauren Hamilton and Rachel Beninati has combined to allow 11 goals. Bartram Trail outscored its three regional opponents 12-3, defeating Ponte Vedra on penalty kicks in the regional semifinals.
Scouting Lakewood Ranch: The Mustangs (19-0-2) are also making their first trip to the state semifinals following Saturday’s win over Naples Barron Collier in the Region 3 title game. Having not lost a game since last year’s Class 5A regional semifinals, the Mustangs are a balanced bunch — junior Sarah Miller leads them in goals (25) and assists (16), but three other players have scored at least 10 goals and four have at least 10 assists. Senior co-captains Kaitlyn Kerrigan (a center midefielder with 11 goals and 11 assists) and Kristen Hagaman (a center defender who is headed to Mercer University on a scholarship) form the team’s emotional center, while senior goalie Katherine Somodi has 52 saves and has allowed 11 goals in 21 games.
