MANATEE — Port Manatee officials are hosting the Panamanian ambassador to the United States today, hoping to increase trade between the two countries.

Port officials and U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, are touring the port with Jaime Eduardo Aleman Healy.

Aleman told port officials and business leaders that his country plans to finish widening the Panama Canal in 2014, and “that means good things for the port here.”

A delegation of local county and business officials plan to reciprocate with a trade mission to Panama scheduled for later this month.
