Hearts Afire Inc. will be sending an 11-medical team, including two Bradenton physicians, to Haiti this weekend, according to the Sarasota-based charity.
The team, which also includes nurses and logistics personnel, will leave Saturday from Fort Lauderdale for the Domincan Republic. After landing in Santo Domingo, they will drive to Port-au-Prince.
The medical team includes Dr. Nilesh Patel, a Bradenton anesthesiologist, and Dr. Gary Dunlap, a Bradenton orthopedic surgeon. Also making the trip are five Sarasota physicians and doctors from Amherst, N.Y. and Chicago.
In Haiti, four members of a logistical team will assess the situation from Petit Goave to Jacmel to determine the health care needs in the region. Also, a surgical team will meet with three different organizations to determine needs in Port-au-Prince.

Specific needs include:
- Money to purchase medication and medical supplies and for transportation of these items into Haiti.
- Medical supplies (surgical kits, gloves, bandages, gauze, saline flushes, wound care items, sutures, among others).
- Medicines (IV fluids, IV antibiotics, analgesics, liquid Motrin for children).
- Volunteers (to make phone calls on Hearts Afire’s behalf, requesting donations, supplies etc.
- GPS units so doctors can provide their exact coordinates when requesting security for their teams.
- Access to airplanes and pilots who can fly directly into Haiti.
