Blackflow devices need protection

Manatee County Utilities Department urges residents to protect backflow devices when temperatures drop to freezing levels, since property owners are responsible for the maintenance of the backflow assembly.

There are several options for protecting the backflow devices. Residents may:

n Cover the backflow device with a blanket or sheet and Duct tape it securely;

n Insulate exposed pipes or purchase specially made covers.

If the assembly should freeze or stop working, property owners should call a plumber or the tester who certified it last to have it repaired.

Backflow prevention devices are used to protect water supplies from contamination or pollution. They are required for any homes and businesses built after July 20, 1987 that irrigate from a well, pond or any county water. Devices are also required for homes and businesses that have had an irrigation system installed after 1987.
