BRADENTON -- A two-vehicle crash on Palma Sola Causeway closed the roadway Friday afternoon.

The driver of a car that crashed into a tanker was pronounced dead at Bayfront Medical Center.

For an unknown reason, an east-bound 2004 Mercury Sabal crossed into the west-bound lane and collided with a tanker truck, said Lt. Keith Davis of the Bradenton Police Department.

The accident, about 5 p.m., closed the road for several hours during the investigation and cleanup of the scene.

The driver of the tanker suffered minor injuries and was treated at Manatee Memorial Hospital.

Cleanup crews are expected to return to the scene Saturday to remove spilled diesel fuel. Forty of 50 gallons of fuel are believed to have spilled from the tanker.
