Carr leads Falcons past Panthers

BRADENTON — Megan Carr may have scored four goals in a game once before.

Thursday evening, however, she couldn’t quite remember.

She was too busy trying to wrap her head around the best performance of her young varsity career.

“I thought I was dreaming out there,” said Carr, an eighth-grade forward on Saint Stephen’s girls soccer team.

To the delight of Carr and the rest of the Falcons, it was all a reality — Saint Stephen’s knocked off host Bradenton Christian 8-0 in the longtime rivals’ pivotal Class 2A-District 11 game.

Fueling the win was Carr, who scored four goals, including one on a header and another coming on a penalty kick.

Her final goal, which came with less than 13 minutes remaining, ended the game because of the mercy rule.

“We’re fortunate to have her,” said Saint Stephen’s coach Bill Unzicker. “Our young girls seem to do well (at Bradenton Christian). ... There’s a lot of emotions involved in this. A lot of the girls played together, a lot of them grew up together, and they really play us strong.

“And maybe because the younger girls are unaware of what ties (the rivalry) in, maybe that’s why they do so well.”

Whatever the reason, Carr helped stoke a rally that Saint Stephen’s (10-2, 5-0) took it’s time building, as the Falcons had just two shots on goal in the game’s first 20 minutes.

Then Hannah Howell scored less than 10 minutes before the half. Eight minutes later, Alyssa Allen scored off a breakaway. Not long after that, Carr buried her first goal of the day inside the right post.

Suddenly, it was 3-0 at halftime.

“After that first goal, they moved a couple of players around. That opened up a little bit for us,” Unzicker said. “And we had a talk at halftime. We discussed that we have to mentally and physically adjust to the opponent. And they came out and they did that.”

Amy Ivin and Martine Miller added goals for Saint Stephen’s, and Howell dished out two assists.

The Panthers fell to 6-2 and 4-2.
