NFL players to help feed local families

NFL football players and former Manatee County standouts Mike Jenkins (Dallas Cowboys), Fabian Washington (Baltimore Ravens) and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Arizona Cardinals) are joining forces to feed 400 families for the Thanksgiving holiday. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 24 they will be handing out boxes of food and personal items at the DeSoto Square mall, 303 U.S. 301 Blvd.

All three are starting cornerbacks for their respective NFL teams and the Cornerback Connection is teaming up with Feed the Children, international relief organization. The Manatee County natives mission is: “Bringing Families Together & Impacting a Community”.

Juco basketball: Manatees beat Palm Beach

BRADENTON — Kevin Harden scored 23 of his 27 points in the second half to lead State College of Florida (4-1) to an 86-75 victory over Palm Beach CC.

Derek Robbins hit three 3-pointers among his 15 points, and Tim Plummer dished out nine assists for SCF, which trailed 39-38 at halftime.

SCF gets does not play again until Nov. 28 at Palm Beach.

Girls soccer: Mustangs blank Hurricanes

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Lakewood Ranch (4-0) got two goals from Deana Haller and one each from Sarah Wolfe, Kaitlyn Kerrigan and Kre Voight in a 5-0 victory over visiting Manatee.

Goalie Katherine Somodi earned the shutout thanks in part to the defensive work of Kristen Hagaman, Rachel Wojcicki, Ashley Longworth and Hayley Martin.

Lakewood Ranch has outscored the opposition 16-2 this season.

Boys soccer: Hurricanes blank Mustangs

BRADENTON — Jordan Rothseld and Kyle Harris scored goals for Manatee (3-0-1) in a 2-0 win over Lakewood Ranch (2-1-1).

Stephen Thomas and Chris Kurutz assisted on the goals, and Charlie Dye had six saves for his second shutout.
