Ranch girls, boys solid at state meet

Lakewood Ranch’s boys and girls teams each cracked the top 11 during Thursday’s Class 2A state swimming and diving championships at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando.

The girls were eighth after totaling 97 points. Ashley Reid was fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.56) and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.17).

Reid also swam a leg on the Mustangs’ 200 medley relay, which placed seventh (1:54.56), and the 400 medley relay, which finished fourth (3:41.27).

Danielle Valley, Rebekah Baker and Shannon McCarthy joined Reid on both teams.

The boys were 11th with 70 points. John Silvers, who will sign a letter-of-intent today with Penn State, was eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:46.18) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:38.29). Lucas Thompson was seventh in the 50 freestyle (21.93).

Girls soccer

PALMETTO 5, MANATEE 0 — Irene Gallardo scored a hat trick, and the Tigers (4-0) beat the visiting Hurricanes (1-2) for the second time this season.

Sammie Mathews had two goals and an assist, while Autum Jordan and Idali Paniagua also assisted on goals.

Goalie Paige McFarland and captain Marisol Valente led a strong defensive effort that also included Lucia Gonzalez, Kristen Ferrari, Cassandra Ordonez, Paniagua and Sarah Shields.

n Manatee beat Palmetto 2-0 in the JV game. The Hurricanes (2-1) got goals from Leah Tyrell and Katie Belisle.

CARDINAL MOONEY 5, SARASOTA CHRISTIAN 0 — Megan McCurdy scored two goals, while Abby Goecker and Hannah Howard each had two assists for the visiting Cougars (1-3).

Three other Mooney players scored a goal — Shereen Baghi, Alexa Stein and Sam Savinsky.

LAKELAND CHRISTIAN 1, SAINT STEPHEN’S 0 — Avory LaValliere had eight saves for the visiting Falcons, allowing just one goal in the 15th minute.

Cassidy Whidden and Amber Falkner were key cogs in a strong defensive effort from Saint Stephen’s (2-2).

Boys soccer

MANATEE 2, SARASOTA 0 — Chris Kurutz had a goal and an assist, and Joey Hutchinson scored on an assist from Kyle Harris as the host

LAKEWOOD RANCH 1, RIVERVIEW 1 — Sam Severson scored the lone goal for the Mustangs on an assist from Chris Schuetz.

Zach Reda had seven saves for Lakewood Ranch (1-0-1), which recieved strong defensive play from Lee White, Jason Ferguson, Matt Ferguson, Tre Flagg and Schuetz.

Girls basketball

LAKEWOOD RANCH 53, MANATEE 48 — Alexis Henri scored 17 points for the host Hurricanes. In other action at the Tip-Off Classic, Palmetto defeated Cardinal Mooney.

The Hurricanes open the regular season Nov. 24 at Palmetto.

BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 64, ST. PETE SHORECREST 43 — Maria DeKuiper scored 21 points to lead the Panthers in their Tip-Off Classic at Shorecrest.

Rachel Brown scored 24 on Tuesday, when BCS defeated Seminole Osceola 65-55.

The Panthers open the regular season Tuesday at home against Lakewood Ranch.

Boys basketball

EDISON 78, UNIVERSAL ACADEMY 39 — Zach Kendall and P.J. Ingram each scored 19 points as Edison Academic Center improved to 2-0 this season.
