Falcons keep on rolling

Saint Stephen’s volleyball team added another notch to its record-setting season Thursday in St. Petersburg.

The Falcons rolled past Shorecrest 3-0, winning by scores of 25-23, 25-18, 25-14 to improve to 18-4.

“We’ve never won that many,” said coach Nancy Cothron, whose team set the record when the Falcons won their 16th game of the season.

Sisters Morgan and Melissa Johnson had nine kills. Lauren Johnson, of no relation, had eight kills, and Maggie Holbert had 27 assists and three aces.

Cothron also credited the defense and passing of Brooke Cornetet, the Falcons’ defensive specialist.

Saint Stephen’s has clinched the second seed for the Class 2A-District 11 tournament, which begins Monday, Oct. 26 at Out-of-Door Academy.

In JV action, the Falcons lost 2-1 — 25-17, 22-25, 15-3 — to fall to 3-6.

Boys golf

SOUTHEAST 180, SAINT STEPHEN’S 240 — The Falcons Connor Lynch took medalist honors with a 36, but the Seminoles took the win at The River Club.

Ryan Wolfe carded a 41 and Matt Fenske a 43 for the Noles (6-10).

Juco volleyball

SOUTH FLORIDA CC 3, STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 2 — The Manatees fell 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-12.

Aurora Newgard had 16 kills and 29 digs, and Emily Strack had 12 kills and 20 digs for SCF (4-23).

Brittany Kingsley had 14 kills and 23 digs and Abby Daiotti had 36 digs for the Manatees.

Junior varsity football

MANATEE 42, RIVERVIEW 0 — Cord Sandberg threw for three scores, and Ryan Taylor caught a pair of touchdown passes and threw one of his own as the visiting Hurricanes improved to 6-0.

John McElfresh, Brandon Carnes, Anthony Lauro and Marcus Blake also scored for Manatee. Brent Yancy and Trevor Beeman each hauled in two interceptions for the victors.

Freshman football

SOUTHEAST 56, BRADEN RIVER 0 — Demari Grant, Logan Beagle, Antonio Ray, Jacob Fanning and B.J. Barnes had touchdowns for the Seminoles (3-0).
