@BR Body bold Lede colon:Name of restaurant: The Old Salty Dog.
Why we are reviewing this restaurant: The restaurant was recently featured on an episode of The Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food.”
The show’s host, Adam Richman, travels around the country trying a variety of cuisines and taking on outrageous food challenges.
What’s on the menu: The menu features fresh seafood in a variety of preparations. It is, after all, located right on the water. There are fish and chips ($12.95), a “krab” cake basket ($8.95) and a shrimp dinner cooked in the style of your choice: charbroiled, blackened or deep-fried ($14.95).
What we ate: After watching “Man vs. Food,” we had to eat what he ate. It looked oh, so good, and oh, so bad, for us. So, we skipped lunch and aimed for an early dinner. My husband and I took a seat by the water at the City Island location and dived in with a traditional Salty Dog ($6.95) and a fully loaded version (just under $12).
The Salty Dog is a homemade hot dog dipped in beer batter and fried to crunchy perfection. The fully loaded version comes complete with bacon, sauerkraut, sauteed mushrooms and onions and cheese. A lot of cheese.
We started our meal with one of Salty Dog’s fall specials, some peel-and -eat shrimp. This was a phenomenal offering. They were big and plump and smothered in an Old-Bay driven sauce (garlic is a co-star, too).
The shrimp are served with a side of melted butter and a side of cocktail sauce.
If you could believe, we even saved a sliver of room for a piece of Key Lime Pie. It was tangy and creamy, just the way we like it. It was the perfect touch of acidity to our palettes after all of the fried food.
Do they serve alcohol?: The Old Salty Dog has a full bar and plenty of drink specials. It also serves a wide variety of beers, including Boddington’s. Happy hour is 3-6 p.m. and 10 p.m.-midnight, Monday through Friday.
How was the service?: Our waitress was friendly and helpful. She allowed us to have our dinner at a leisurely pace.
How was the décor/cleanliness?: The City Island location is located over the water next to Mote Marine. It has a laid-back, beachy vibe with many tables offering a terrific water view. There is also a location at City Island.
Is the restaurant family friendly?: With hot dogs as a specialty of the house, the place can’t possibly be a bad fit for the kids.
Our verdict: We will definitely go back to the Old Salty Dog. Next time, I’ve been told to try the Dog Bites (basically the Salty Dog, but cut into chunks before they are fried).
