MANATEE — No work has started yet on local transportation projects funded by the federal economic stimulus package, with the first scheduled expected to begin in October, the Florida Department of Transportation said Monday.

FDOT plans to open contractors’ bids for eight projects in Manatee County on Aug. 26, spokeswoman Cindy Clemmons-Adente said. Work on those projects is expected to start in October, after the bids are verified, a winning bid chosen and a contract negotiated with the winning bidder, she said.

All of the projects in the first round are new sidewalks in Bradenton and Holmes Beach.

FDOT then plans to periodically open bids for other stimulus-funded projects through Feb. 15, with work on the last project — replacing the Ninth Avenue West bridge over Wares Creek — anticipated to start in April, Clemmons-Adente said.

In all, Manatee has 23 projects funded through the $787 billion stimulus.
