MANATEE — A recent series of free educational seminars aimed at helping homeowners facing the prospect of foreclosure was so successful that more are planned, organizers said.
“The need remains great,” said Ken Chapman Jr., a Sarasota attorney and president of the Sarasota-Bradenton Attorneys’ Real Estate Council, which co-sponsored the seminar series.
More than 100 homeowners from Manatee and Sarasota counties attended the previous seminars, held in June and July. Many were recent retirees or those approaching retirement age who have seen their nest eggs shrink because of the stock market and falling home values, Chapman said.
“They thought they had planned (retirement) well but then got a rude awakening,” he said.
At the seminars, attorneys, real estate agents and certified public accountants outlined various options and government programs designed to forestall foreclosure. They also cover ways to avoid foreclosure-rescue scams.
The upcoming seminars are:
n 6 p.m. Wednesday at Sara Bay Real Estate, 7333 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
n 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at Manatee County Central Library meeting room, 1301 Barcarrota Blvd. W., Bradenton
n 5:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Selby Public Library downstairs meeting room, 1331 First St., Sarasota.
n 10 a.m. Aug. 15 at Leslie Wells Realty, 8338 U.S. 301 N, Parrish.
n 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Moose Lodge, 310 44th Ave. E., Bradenton.
n 10 a.m. Sept. 19 at Leslie Wells Realty, 8338 U.S. 301 N., Parrish.
