URGENT: Gunman reported on USF campus in Tampa

Published: July 24, 2009

TAMPA — The University of South Florida in Tampa says a gunman has been reported on campus.

The school says on its Web site that students should stay inside and lock their doors and avoid the area near the bioscience building, where the gunman was reportedly seen.

The school says police are on their way.

School spokeswoman Lara Wade says no shots have been fired and she’s not sure if anyone is in custody.

Jon Catuccio, who works at the school, says that a little before noon someone said over a loudspeaker that a gunman had been reported at the bioscience building in the heart of campus and people should stay inside.

He says he got an e-mail with the same information and now everyone is “kind of hanging out” and waiting to see what happens.
