Caribbean system could turn into 1st tropical storm of season

There is a 30 percent to 50 percent chance that a large ares of showers and thundersorms in the Caribbean Sea by the end of the weekend could develop into a tropical storm when it moves into the Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center. It would be the the first tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The system, now classified as a "tropical wave," is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms from Cuba and the Cayman Islands soutwestward to the coast of Honduras. No significant development of the storm is expected before it reaches the Yucatan Peninsula early Saturday, according to the Hurricane Center.

Conditions are forecast to be come "a little more favorable" once the system moves into the Gulf of Mexico late Saturday or Sunday.

Locally heavy rains will continue over portions of Cuba and the Cayman Islands today and spread westward over northern Central America and the Yucatan over the next day or so, the Hurricane Center said.
