BRADENTON — A specialty store that provides quality running and walking footwear while promoting a more active lifestyle was the goal for Steve and Sharon Litschauer when they opened On A Shoestring, Inc. in 2005.
The couple launched the store at 3633 Cortez Road W. with the idea of catering to the needs of an active lifestyle and educating the public about the benefits of walking and running. The store carries footwear, apparel, foot inserts, hydration supplies, nutritionals, timing devices, eyewear and other equipment for runners and walkers.
The business works closely with local podiatrists, orthopedic and chiropractic physicians, nutritionists and physical therapists to recommend and fit customers with proper footwear. On A Shoestring also sponsors free clinics locally on the benefits of running, walking and fitness.
With eight employees, On A Shoestring does direct marketing to specific groups like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the 3 Day Breast Walk as well as schools and athletic groups. This outreach has helped the company grow its customer base and establish its company’s branding.
“The company has experienced phenomenal growth over the last three years, in fact tripling in sales over that timeframe,” the judges said.
To improve its sales and productivity, On A Shoestring instituted a physician referral program, a frequent shopper card and a birthday club as well as a free online newsletter.
The Litschauers are on the board of directors or in an advisory capacity for a number of groups including the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen 3 Day Breast Walk Group, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Bradenton Branch YMCA and Manatee Chapter American Red Cross.
Since its founding, the business has been a sponsor or provided financial/material support amounting to thousands of dollars to a variety of local running and walking events and programs.
