MANATEE — A federal judicial panel said it will hold a hearing next month on whether to consolidate several lawsuits over allegedly defective Chinese drywall.
The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation said it will hear oral arguments May 27 in Louisville, Ky.
According to a notice of hearing posted on the panel’s Web site, there are 10 Chinese-drywall lawsuits currently pending. Eight are in Florida, with one each in Louisiana and Ohio.
The suits generally contend that Chinese drywall installed in U.S. homes emits a “rotten eggs” odor because of high sulphur content, corrodes copper and air-conditioning components throughout the home, and causes reactions such as difficulty breathing, sneezing and nosebleeds.
Lawyers in a South Florida case are seeking to consolidate all such cases, with a federal judge in Miami overseeing it.
